Open Window

Mexico City-based artist Ricardo Rendón regards his site-specific installations as interventions – actions that disrupt our expectations within a given situation. For BMoCA, he created Open Window, a monumental installation that engages the public through an altered architecture, while interacting with the works on view inside the museum by providing a darkened environment. Working with heavy machinery and tools commonly used for construction and manual labor, he punctures drywall panels that have been inserted to cover all windows, creating random allover circular patterns that allow beams of sunlight to seep through and change direction as the day progresses. Rendón leaves the cutout pieces where they fall as a record of the perforating action and signifying the possibility to continue puncturing until the windows are returned to their ordinary function.

To create a darkened environment inside the museum, Mexican artist Ricardo Rendón was invited to complete an intervention covering the museum windows.

El artista con sede en la Ciudad de México, Ricardo Rendón, considera sus instalaciones site-specific como intervenciones – acciones que alteran nuestras expectativas dentro de una situación dada. Para BMoCA, creó Open Window, una instalación monumental que involucra al público a través de una arquitectura alterada, al mismo tiempo que interactúa con las obras expuestas dentro del museo al proporcionar un ambiente oscurecido. Trabajando con maquinaria pesada y herramientas comúnmente utilizadas para la construcción y el trabajo manual, perfora paneles de drywall que han sido colocados para cubrir todas las ventanas, creando patrones circulares aleatorios que permiten que haces de luz solar se filtren y cambien de dirección a medida que avanza el día. Rendón deja las piezas recortadas donde caen como registro de la acción perforadora, significando la posibilidad de continuar perforando hasta que las ventanas recuperen su función ordinaria.

Para crear un ambiente oscurecido dentro del museo, el artista mexicano Ricardo Rendón fue invitado a realizar una intervención cubriendo las ventanas del museo.
