Levitaciones e Hipersuperficies (Levitations and Hypersurfaces) — Anthological exhibition of Ricardo Rendón

Museo Federico Silva Escultura Contemporánea, San Luis Potosí, Mexico, 2026
Curator: Emmanuel Albarrán

Over nearly three decades of creative practice, the investigations of Ricardo Rendón (Mexico City, 1970) depart from specific premises of physics — without functioning as illustrations of it, but rather as an exercise of its methods. Balance, tension, gravity, relativity, matter and void, tensegrity: these have served him to construct not so much a language as a poetics of form and, in particular, of movement.

This first anthological exhibition of Rendón brings together seven of his refined bodies of sculptural, installation, performative and sound work, together with a new series produced expressly from the sculptural collection of Maestro Federico Silva, property of Dr. Esther González. These investigations resist an evolutionary reading of “stages” or “periods,” as Rendón has repeatedly returned to the same fundamental questions of sculpture and phenomenology: What is the relationship between the one who makes, the thing made, and the time in which it occurs? From these derive clusters of questions formulated from the trades, physics, geometry and the biomechanics of gesture. His works are sober questions launched while avoiding artifice; they are stated as efficient questions.

Effort
Already in Forced Labor (Trabajo forzado, 2003), Rendón posed the problem in its most literal terms: the body subjected to a physical task as the origin of form. The hand-to-hand encounter with matter through which he desacralizes the artist’s creative act, making transparent “the magic” of the trades — masonry, furriery, carving, lathe work, carpentry, welding, marquetry, marble work, stonework or weaving — allowing us to glimpse it while preserving the aesthetic of the workshop and the tool. But his insistence on manipulating wood, felt and steel himself is not nostalgia for craftsmanship; it is a way of resisting the abstraction of contemporary work and of eliminating the idea of productivity from the creative act.

Action before object
Rendón privileges the hand over design, empirical resolution over prior calculation and, beyond that, the logbook of transformation over the finished object. In his explorations, the sculptural object — far from being immaculate — is turned into a device that invites interaction. On other occasions it is perforated or hollowed, generating a play between inside and outside that lays bare the idea of the perennial monolith (of the art object or of the architectural wall).

In his mobile installations, the activation caused by wind, temperature or the hand itself implies knowing the object from its multiple aspects; in Rendón’s words: it is like flipping a coin in the air; it proposes unfoldings in systems that prevent the states of the object from cancelling each other out; in this way we can also appreciate what was there only in potentiality.

Systems
The drawing-actions in space created by Rendón — whether with steel cables, with light and shadow or with sound — intend to remind us that constellations are in the eyes of man, in our elemental need to commune with points in space, to weave in the void. They also make us aware of the environment we inhabit, that we are immersed in a profuse space, like the fish that does not know it is in the water until it is taken out of it.

The Museo Federico Silva Escultura Contemporánea, unique of its kind in Latin America, affirms with this anthological review of Ricardo Rendón the experimental vocation that gave it origin and its deep commitment to contemporary art in Mexico.
